From the Visua Vaults - The Architecture and Design Publication Group considers itself the ‘new kids on the block’ in publishing. The business provides a bespoke printed publication platform for the local Australian creative industry; working in a space which is quickly, and unfortunately, succumbing to the digital era.

Visua was asked to assist in the renaming and rebranding of ‘The Architecture and Design Publication Group’ to make it more in line with the company’s values and vision for the future. Working in collaboration with key stakeholders, a brand framework was developed, providing the foundations for a brand strategy which saw the renaming of the business to ‘AND Publishers’ (Architecture ‘N’ Design).

This also saw the development of a new brand identity which encapsulated the idea of print and its innate tactile properties. Basing the brand mark on the ampersand, a custom symbol/font was designed which portrays a seated figure, reading a book. An underlying concept of ‘getting something out of reading’ led to the brand mark appearing as if it has been taken from the book.

Competitive sheepdog trials have been conducted in Australia for approximately 150 years. During the events, one or two dogs move three to six sheep around a paddock, fences, gates, yards or enclosures according to a handler’s instructions. Separating sheep is particularly difficult for the dogs as herd animals naturally resist being split into groups. In Australia, sheepdogs are predominantly Kelpies and Border Collies, both exceptionally intelligent, agile, and obedient breeds, with great stamina for hard work.

Visua’s stamp design celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first Australian Sheepdog Trials, depicting three illustrated portraits of the most common breeds used in competition. The portraits convey the loving, playful ‘off-duty’ character of the dogs, while the lower section of the stamps feature the highly focused ‘on-duty’ in-competition character each dog demonstrates while at their handler’s command.

The individual stamp colours were inspired by Australia’s rural and outback farming landscapes; clear blue skies, lush green winter fields and dry summer sun-burnt paddocks. Visua also designed the postmark, a playful paw-print, as well as an extensive range of stamp products including first day covers, minisheets, booklets, postcards and stamp dispenser boxes.

Visua recently had the opportunity to help a client out with sports branding for its local amateur division basketball team, the ‘Oilers’. Not named after the famous NBA team of the same name, but rather due to more than half of the team's members having worked in the oil industry at one time or another.

The logo consists of bespoke, hand-crafted typography supporting a stylised basketball which uses the natural line-work of the ball to form an oil droplet. The logo has been designed to work on both light and dark backgrounds without changing the logo. The logo colours were derived from the ball itself and the team’s uniforms are designed to reflect the logo colourways vignetting from orange to black.

Watch this space as the ‘Oilers’ power their way up the divisional rankings. Go Oilers!

‘People, Products, Passion’ - the strategic design theme for the BWX Limited 2021 Annual Report celebrates the efforts and achievements of staff at all levels, throughout the global Covid-19 pandemic. Visua utilised a 'best practice' approach, resulting in a highly user-friendly and engaging document. The design boldly reinforces the company's commitment to the environment, sustainability and core values of ‘Natural beauty and wellness for the world’.

The countdown is on to Tokyo 2020. While the Games of the XXXII Olympiad - defiantly still known as Tokyo 2020 - have been delayed by 12 months, Japan has risen to the colossal challenge of staging the Games during the Covid-19 pandemic, establishing a new set of guiding principles and rules to shape a safe international event.

Commissioned by Australia Post back in 2019, Visua's stamp design for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics reflects the aesthetic essence of host country Japan, through its simple, bold, clean graphics. Deliberately ambiguous, the four interlocking figures represent both Olympians and Paralympians alike, coming together in the spirit of the Games from all nations.

The colours reflect those of that most recognisable of Olympic symbols - the five interlocking rings - which also influenced the custom hand-drawn typography. The typography and background Os of the stamp are designed to join top and bottom, as well as left and right, a further expression of the linking Olympic rings.

Visua has assisted in all areas of the business and its affiliated groups, from ongoing brand management, graphic standards, packaging, signage, print collateral and digital applications. We are passionate about seeing Ryco continue as a market leader.

Visua worked closely with Ryco to develop a positioning statement for its products. Today ‘Genuine Performance’ is used to position the company and its products, but these words go far deeper than originally intended. They describe the passion and energy of the business and its people, and more recently have helped bridge the gap into the fast paced, high performance world of V8 motorsport.

From the Visua vaults - The brand identity for SDA Architects is an exercise in minimalism. Starting with the notion of representing architecture in its simplest geometric form (a square), and evolving a brand mark that is constrained by that form, but that also breaks outside the form to suggest thinking outside the square.

The brand identity is composed of three letters ‘SDA’, but then treats those letters like elements of a building; each laid out like rooms within a floor plan. Architect, Mies van der Rohe, coined the phrase ‘Less is More’, an expression of removing all superfluous elements resulting in something that is truly aesthetic in its simplicity.

The implementation of the brand across digital and printed collateral stays true to the minimalist approach. Simple black and white applications, beautifully detailed and produced in print, reinforce the design values of the architects. The use of letterpress printing provides a tactile quality to stationery items.

More recently, the school has seen marked growth requiring comprehensive, new and updated facilities. As a historical record, it is necessary to acknowledge key milestones and document significant dwellings that previously occupied the site. An interpretive signage system has been developed that visually portrays the historical relevance of each location, drawing cues from the school’s most recent contemporary architectural additions, while blending sympathetically with existing buildings. The stainless steel signs consist of etched and paint filled graphics which tell the story to students, parents, teachers and the general public.

Repost from the Visua Vaults - We look back to our naming, strategy and branding work for Momentum Builders, a leading Melbourne residential and commercial construction company. After conducting an extensive visual audit of all existing branded material, Visua developed a naming and branding strategy to set a new benchmark in the construction industry. With the concept of ‘individuals working together to create contemporary architecture’ Visua designed the brand mark and implemented it across all internal and external forms of communication, from letterheads to purchase order forms and email footers, from building signage to site signage. Repost from the Visua Vaults - We look back to our naming, strategy and branding work for Momentum Builders, a leading Melbourne residential and commercial construction company. After conducting an extensive visual audit of all existing branded material, Visua developed a naming and branding strategy to set a new benchmark in the construction industry. With the concept of ‘individuals working together to create contemporary architecture’ Visua designed the brand mark and implemented it across all internal and external forms of communication, from letterheads to purchase order forms and email footers, from building signage to site signage. Visua recently collaborated with a Melbourne based, multi-award winning architectural practice, to help it reinvent itself. The business had grown beyond the profile of the principal architect, so the focus of the company needed to move away from having an individual as its representative, to that of a collaborative, experienced, and well-established team.

Name generation is never easy, however with creative freedom comes great rewards and a simple two letter word can help take a business from ‘I’ to ‘Us’. Strategically this opened the door to potential future business growth, with ‘Architecture by Us’ at the core, branching into ‘Interiors by Us’ and ‘Built by Us’.

Visua’s design for the brand identity draws its inspiration from aerial views of rural and urban architectural landscapes. The ambiguous centre square can represent a humble residential dwelling or a multi-storey high-rise sitting amongst landscaped gardens. No expense was spared achieving a suite of crafted stationery items, printed letterpress by the talented @taylordpress.

With global offices located in Melbourne Australia and California, the company is better known for its five market-leading brands, Sukin, Andalou Naturals, Mineral Fusion, Nourished Life and USPA.

The centrepiece of this rejuvenation, the 2020 annual report, visually promotes a sense of quiet confidence. Visua employed a ‘best practice’ approach, resulting in a highly user-friendly and informative document. The annual report boldly reinforces BWX’s commitment to the environment, sustainability and core values of ‘transforming beauty naturally’.

The report stays true to the company’s existing graphic standards, embracing the extended colour palette, fonts and iconography. The final result, a visually engaging document, digitally printed in limited quantities to the highest environmental standards, including 100% recycled paper, and printed using a carbon neutral process.
